Student apprehended over 1-yen electricity theft

OSAKA — A university student was apprehended on suspicion of stealing 1 yen of electricity after he unplugged a vending machine to play his street-dancing music on his radio-cassette recorder, it has been learned.

Police said the 22-year-old student unplugged the supermarket juice vending machine so he could play his dance music to accompany a performance outside Keihan Hirakatashi Station in the predawn hours of Nov. 26 last year.

He reportedly played his radio-cassette recorder for about five minutes, using about 1 yen of electricity. Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Jan. 10, 2004
